So, after 6 months without having television, we finally figured out how to get connected.
Have to just say that when you move and have NOTHING, TV just doesn't climb to the top of the list very quickly! It's like ok, do I want to figure out how to buy a refrigerator today or get TV - ummmm.... refrigerator! Or curtains, or food or just about anything can beat out TV for quite a while.
A little while back we did buy an actual TV, but we never hooked it up to watched television programs. We just used it to watch the movies that we have.
So a couple weeks ago, through a friend that we met in the village we were able to get it connected.
They actually have satellite TV here! I am shocked! One great thing is that we can watch the news or whatever else in the language that we are learning. It's so encouraging to us to watch it and actually have a clue about what they are talking about!
Then last week, I saw something.
I figured out that we have some American TV shows on the programming!
We actually got to watch American Idol last Thursday! I have to say, it was kinda weird sitting in India watching American Idol. But it was great!
Then last night, I checked this station that had AI on it and Survivor was on! I haven't seen that in f-o-r-e-v-e-r!!!! I've always loved this show ... well, I really liked the first couple seasons and then it went downhill to me and I didn't watch it for a long time. Now, since I've seen nothing familiar in over 6 months, it's great to be able to watch it again.
As I was watching it, though, something dawned on me. They are missing the boat. This is too easy for these people. All of them (what is there, like 16?) come from the SAME culture.
Sure there are some that come from different parts of America (like Eddie George's wife- wow - she's a hoot! or that Coach guy) but they all understand each others culture from some perspective.
I say, let's make up a Survivor show with one person each from America, India, Russia, Iran, Spain, China, England, Guatemala, Peru, Jamaica, Venezuela, France, Great Britain, Mongolia, North Korea, and Turkey.
Now that would be a true Survivor!!!!
What would happen when the American girl shows up in her ridiculous 2 piece bikini and the Indian women has on her sari 24/7 (yes, they sleep in them!). THAT would be a show and would certainly be interesting.
I don't think the food challenges would be that big a deal anymore to some of them either!
Or what about when the Iranian man prays to the east 5 times a day and the guy from France doesn't even believe in God. Now there would be some instant discussion material being stuck in the middle of nowhere for a month!
I guess I am just kinda tired of watching Americans fight amongst themselves. There's really not that big of a void that they can't understand each other if they would just put some effort into it.
Understanding another culture only makes us better people, we see things as we see them but then we also get the opportunity to understand the same things through someone else's perspective. That's a rich life.
So, I just need to figure out where to submit my suggestion for Inter-Cultural Survivor ... maybe there's a comment box on the website ... hmmmmm ....

Very interesting. Love the idea. Perhaps you should call what's his name who creates all those shows and propose your idea. You could certainly live for a while off the royalties!!
Oh I would so watch that season of Survivor!!! Heck, I'd sign up to be the American girl (minus the bikini) lol. I love learning about different cultures and the way they see things. It's all very interesting.
