A Simple Response

As I mentioned before, we have been 'kicking it up a notch' (thanks Emeril) in regards to discussing our impending move with our kiddos. We have always made this an ongoing conversation, but we have pretty much let them lead as far as when to talk about it and how much. Now we are bringing it up more often and just directing the conversation more.

The other morning we were getting ready to leave and the younger one of our kids said, "we will miss a lot of people when we go to India." This was kinda out of the blue since we hadn't actually been talking about it that day yet or even the night before. I just said, "yes, we will miss a lot of people, but you know that there are friends for you in India. You will get to make all kinds of new friends!"

Then with a moment's thought, this always thought provoking kid of ours says, "how do you say 'HI' in India?" (mind you, I wasn't even sure that our younger kiddo really totally understood the idea of speaking a different language)

I was a little surprised by the question, and even more stunned when I realized that I really didn't know the answer!

I know how to say, "how are you?" but technically I don't actually know how to just say HI.

For a moment, I started to get that kinda overwhelming feeling. That feeling when something is true and you know it's true, but all the sudden the reality of the truth hits you between the eyes. A picture of one of us standing in front of a cashier trying to understand how much we owe, or where we could find something suddenly flashed through my mind.

After I got back to focusing on the conversation, I had to honestly say, "well I don't know how to say HI. But we will learn!"

Then after a look of, "really?" This great kid responded to me with, "I know, we will just say hi like this, "HI!" and wave our hands."

All the sudden I thought, "Yeah, that's it ...... as we are learning, we will use what we know and trust for the difference of what we are lacking to be taken care of. Our God is just that big!"

Talk about making it simple!

It's amazing to me how a simple response from a kid who is just trying to figure out how to make friends in a new place can bring such calm.

It's good reminder to not get overwhelmed and to just take it one day at a time.

We can learn a lot from our kids!
